From Real Madrid to Barcelona FC, Spain is famous for its top level football players. The sporting world in Spain is about so much more than just its footballers, however, and here we list some of the top Spanish sportspeople.
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Born in 1971, Arantxa was a tennis player who in February 6, 1995, reached the Nº1 world rank. Throughout her career she won four Grand Slam singles titles, six Grand Slam women’s doubles titles and four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She is the only tennis player in history that has played in five Olympics Games.
Another tennis player! Rafa Nadal, known as The King of Clay because of his skills playing in clay-courts, was born in 1986 and is considered one of the best players in history. He is currently number 4 in the world, but when he was 22 he became number one and he once was number one for 141 weeks!
She is a Spanish synchronised swimmer from Barcelona. She was born in 1977 and competed at the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Summer Olympics. She retired in 2012 and afterwards she started coaching But returned to compete in 2015 and 2016.
This basque mountaineer is from the province of Gipuzkoa and in 2001 she climbed Mount Everest. In 2010 she became the first woman to climb all of the fourteen eight-thousander peaks in the world.
Born in 1980, this rhythmic gymnast competed on the Spanish national team until 2008, when she retired. She is the only rhythmic gymnast who has competed in four Olympic Finals. Currently she works as a sports commentator for gymnastics competitions.
This woman proves that weightlifting is not only for men! She’s been to three Olympic Games in which she’s won a gold and a silver medal. She participates in the category under 75kg and lifts 135kg in full clean, a weightlifting movement.
